How to Wash Your Human Hair Wig
A simple step-by-step guide to keeping your wig soft, healthy and beautiful
A human hair wig is an investment, and with the right care, you can keep it looking soft, silky and beautifully natural for much longer.
Unlike the hair growing from your scalp, wig hair doesn't receive natural oils from your scalp. This means human hair wigs need regular hydration and gentle handling to prevent dryness, tangling and damage.
The good news? Washing your wig at home is simple once you know the right technique.
What You'll Need
Before you begin, gather:
-
A wide-tooth comb or wig brush
-
A gentle shampoo suitable for human hair wigs
-
A nourishing conditioner
-
A clean, soft towel
-
A wig stand or mannequin head
-
Lukewarm water
Step 1 — Gently Detangle
Always detangle your wig before getting it wet.
Never pull through knots from the roots downwards, as this can place unnecessary tension on the hair and increase shedding.
Take your time, particularly around the nape of the neck where tangling is most common.
Step 2 — Rinse the Hair
Use lukewarm water and allow the water to flow through the hair in the same direction as the hair falls.
Avoid very hot water, which can contribute to dryness and may affect colour-treated hair.
Do not scrub, twist or vigorously rub the wig. Excessive movement can cause the hair to tangle and can put unnecessary stress on delicate lace and hand-tied areas.
Top tip: Keep the hair flowing in one direction throughout the washing process to help prevent tangles.
Step 3 — Shampoo
Apply a small amount of human-hair-friendly shampoo to your hands and gently distribute it through the hair.
Work from the top of the hair towards the ends using smooth, gentle movements.
There's no need to vigorously massage or scrub the hair. Your goal is to remove oil, styling products and everyday build-up while keeping the hair and cap as protected as possible.
Pay particular attention to the nape and areas where styling products may have accumulated.
Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water until all shampoo has been removed.
Step 4 — Condition
This is one of the most important steps when caring for a human hair wig.
Apply a nourishing conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends, concentrating on areas that feel dry or prone to tangling.
Important: Keep conditioner away from the cap and roots
Avoid applying conditioner directly to the lace, knots or base of the wig.
Conditioner can soften the knots holding the hair in place and may contribute to shedding over time.
Gently work the conditioner through the lengths using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
Leave for approximately 3–5 minutes, or follow the instructions on your chosen product.
Then rinse thoroughly with cool to lukewarm water.
For particularly dry hair
If your wig feels dry, coarse or lacks its usual softness, an occasional deep-conditioning treatment can help restore moisture and improve manageability.
Step 5 — Remove Excess Water
Once your wig has been thoroughly rinsed, never wring or twist it.
Instead, gently squeeze the hair to remove excess water.
Place the wig on a clean towel and carefully blot it dry.
Do not rub the hair with the towel, as friction can cause tangling, frizz and unnecessary wear.
Step 6 — Dry Your Wig Naturally
Place the damp wig on a suitable wig stand and allow it to air dry naturally.
Gently arrange the hair into its desired direction while it is still damp.
If the wig has a parting, use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to position it before the hair completely dries.
For the best results, allow the wig to dry fully before wearing or styling it.
How Often Should You Wash Your Human Hair Wig?
There isn't one perfect washing schedule for everyone.
How often you need to wash your wig depends on how frequently you wear it, how much styling product you use, your lifestyle and how much perspiration or environmental exposure the wig receives.
As a general guide, avoid washing your wig unnecessarily. If it still looks and feels fresh, it probably doesn't need washing yet.
Washing too frequently can gradually reduce the softness and lifespan of the hair.
Our Golden Rules for Human Hair Wig Care
DO:
-
Detangle before washing.
-
Use gentle, suitable haircare products.
-
Work from the ends upwards when detangling.
-
Keep conditioner away from the cap and knots.
-
Blot rather than rub the hair.
-
Allow your wig to dry naturally whenever possible.
-
Store your wig correctly between wears.
DON'T:
-
Don't use very hot water.
-
Don't scrub or vigorously rub the hair.
-
Don't twist or wring the wig.
-
Don't apply conditioner directly to the lace or roots.
-
Don't brush aggressively when the hair is wet.
-
Don't wash your wig simply because it has been a certain number of days.
Looking After Your Wig Between Washes
Good wig care doesn't stop after washing.
To help maintain that fresh, natural look:
Store it properly: Keep your wig on a suitable wig stand when you're not wearing it to help maintain its shape and reduce tangling.
Use heat carefully: Human hair can be styled with heat, but repeated high-temperature styling can cause dryness and damage. Always use a heat-protective product and keep temperatures as low as practical.
Be gentle around the lace: Lace fronts and hand-tied areas are delicate. Avoid unnecessary pulling or brushing directly against the lace.
Keep the ends hydrated: The ends are usually the oldest and most vulnerable part of the wig. A small amount of suitable leave-in conditioner or hair oil can help keep them looking soft and healthy. Avoid applying oils or heavy products directly to the lace or cap.
If your wig starts to feel dry: Apply a small amount of a lightweight leave-in conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends. This helps restore moisture, softness and manageability between washes. Avoid applying it directly to the lace, knots or wig cap, and use only a small amount to prevent product build-up.
