Finding a wig that fits comfortably and securely starts with one simple step: measuring your head correctly.
The right cap size can make all the difference. A well-fitting wig should feel comfortable, stay securely in place and create a natural-looking appearance without feeling too tight or loose.
Whether you’re shopping for a human hair wig or synthetic wig, our simple guide will show you exactly how to measure your head — with no guesswork needed.
What You’ll Need
All you need is:
- A soft fabric measuring tape, like the type used for sewing
- A mirror
Tip: If possible, ask someone to help you take the measurements. This can make it easier to keep the tape level and get a more accurate result.
The 5 Key Wig Measurements
1. Head Circumference
This is the most important measurement when choosing your wig cap size.
Place the measuring tape at the centre of your natural hairline at the front. Bring it around your head, following the hairline around the sides and back, just above the nape of your neck, and return to the starting point.
Make sure the tape sits comfortably around your head without pulling it too tightly.
Record your measurement in both centimetres and inches.
2. Front to Nape
Start at the centre of your natural hairline at the front of your head.
Run the tape over the top of your head and down towards the nape of your neck.
This measurement helps determine the length of the wig cap from front to back.
3. Ear to Ear – Front
Place the tape at the hairline just above one ear.
Measure across your forehead to the hairline above the opposite ear.
Keep the tape following the natural curve of your head rather than pulling it tightly across your forehead.
4. Ear to Ear – Over the Top
Place the tape at the top of one ear and bring it over the crown of your head to the top of the opposite ear.
This measurement helps determine how the wig cap will sit across the top of your head.
5. Temple to Temple – Around the Back
Start at one temple and take the tape around the back of your head to the opposite temple.
Keep the tape comfortably against your head without compressing it.
